FETE NEWS
Dear LPS Families,
What a fantastic day and what great community spirit!! Our fetegoers enjoyed wonderful food and entertainment offered by an array of stalls and performers. Our school bands, string groups and orchestra, our parent ukulele group, a local aerobic group and Latin-American band were well received and added to the truly communal atmosphere. The P&C’s fete committee, headed up by Susan Kelly-Thwaites, Helen Monaghan and Emma Wakeling, are to be congratulated on their organisation and special mention must be made of the wonderful band of parent volunteers who worked tirelessly all day. The P&C Fete Committee raised more than $26 000-an outstanding effort!
NIGHT # 1: STRING PERFORMANCE
Congratulations to our Paganini and Beethoven string groups on their performance on Monday night, August 8 at the Sydney Opera House. Members of both groups performed as part of a larger group in the second half of the concert. From all reports, Leichhardt PS received the biggest reception when they were introduced to the audience and our musicians put in a great performance. Once again we must thank Penny Rees and her team of tutors for all their time and commitment. Penny has done a fabulous job again in preparing the students for the performance. Our students were very well behaved and concentrated so well during the long rehearsals. A special thank you to our parents who helped out with supervision during the final rehearsal on Monday . And finally our gratitude is extended to the many families who came along on performance night. Your support and encouragement was really appreciated by our young performers.
NIGHT #2: ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE
On Tuesday night, August 9 our school orchestra performed an individual item- ‘Aboriginal Rituals’ at the Instrumental Festival at the Opera House. They have been rehearsing intensely for many weeks and were rewarded with an outstanding performance. Their performance attracted enthusiastic praise from music directors, band masters and parents who were in attendance on the night. An amazing effort by a primary school orchestra established only a few months ago. Our young musicians should be congratulated on their hard work and commitment and a big thank you to our band master, Dan Murphy for his nurturing of the orchestra, Penny Rees, Janet McPherson and Vicki Flaherty for their hard work and our orchestra parents for their support.
JUNIOR BAND AND CONCERT BAND WIN GOLD
Our Junior and Concert bands participated in the NSW Band Festival yesterday and both won gold medals!!!! An outstanding effort by both bands and well deserved!! Regular attendance at band rehearsals and private tutoring as well as hard work and commitment have paid dividends. Congratulations to all our band members and Dan Murphy, our band master, and thank you to our parents and band committee members who have been very supportive of the program.
Annual School Report
Each year government schools participate in a formal evaluation of school practices, programs and student learning outcomes. This self-evaluation includes the celebration of school achievements and analyses of school data which informs the school planning committee when determining targets for the school's future development. The culmination of this evaluation is the Annual School Report. Below is the Annual School Report for 2010.

Concert Band and Orchestra Tour of Port Stephens and Newcastle
The band tour has now become an annual event at Leichhardt Public School and for our sixth tour we have decided to explore the Port Stephens area. Like the Hunter Valley, there are a large number of schools in the Port Stephens area who showed an interest in our concert band and orchestra and this year’s accommodation is close to the schools we will be visiting. Our 2011 tour will be held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November.
